Highway Fatality Statistics

EVERY HIGHWAY FATALITY IS PREVENTABLE!

  • 1.25 million highway deaths each year in the world, 117 highway deaths each day, 1 each 12 minutes


  • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for every age from 2 to 33 years of age--worldwide


  • 43,000 highway deaths each year in the United States, 42,815 killed in 2002


  • 25% of all death from injuries are caused by highway fatalities


  • For several years running, August has been the month with the highest number of highway fatalities in the United States
  • Late afternoon-3 p.m. to 6 p.m.-is the worst time of day-nearly 16%


  • Kills young people! 21% of all highway deaths in U.S. are young people: 6% 15 years of age and younger; 15% 16 to 20 year olds; more than 50% of all world highway fatalities strike 15 to 44 year olds


  • Montana has the highest fatality per capita rate in the nation (2.6 in 2002 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled), followed by Alabama (2.43), South Carolina (2.23), West Virginia (2.19), Arizona (2.18), Arkansas (2.13), Nevada (2.12), South Dakota (2.12), Louisiana (2.02), New Mexico (1.97), Wyoming (1.95), Kentucky (1.95), and Idaho (1.86).
